Sun-kissed Photos by Loulou Roskam and the Sprocket Rocket

When our cameras meet someone whose first approach to photography was through Lomography, no doubt the results are even more special. This happened with Loulou, a talented photographer based in Lisbon who first fell in love with photography via some Lomography cameras when she was only 14!

Today we share the beautiful photos she took with the Sprocket Rocket, one of the very few Lomography cameras she hasn't tried before. She shows the magic of the golden hour between Lisbon and Ibiza, captured on LomoChrome Color '92 and on the new Sun-kissed emulsion.

Hi Loulou, welcome to our Magazine! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi! I’m Loulou, a 29-year-old photographer currently based in Lisbon. I was born in Amsterdam and raised in Ibiza, Spain. My passion for camera work started very early, leading me to achieve a Bachelor degree in film school in London, working in documentary filmmaking in New York, and producing short films and commercials in the Netherlands. Now I’m a full-time analogue photographer. My biggest passion in life is traveling, experiencing new cultures and documenting it along the way.

How did your journey into photography begin and what inspired you to pursue this art form?

Funnily enough, my journey began with Lomography. When I was 14 I was on a trip to Barcelona and stumbled across a store that sold Lomography cameras. Not knowing what analogue was or how it worked, I was enthralled by the funky colors and designs of the camera and begged my mum to buy me some. I started playing with all of the funky film rolls (and wasting many because I didn’t realize how analogue worked) and started accumulating more cameras any chance I could. I think I had over 12 different ones within two years.

How would you describe your photographic style?

My photography style is deeply influenced by my upbringing on an island, where I developed a profound connection with nature. This inspires me to always try to intertwine natural elements in all my work, using natural light and creating images that exude a soft, carefree emotion. My photography style is rooted in storytelling and capturing authentic, timeless moments, with any and all imperfections that film brings along with it.

These photos you shot on both LomoChrome Color '92 and the new Sun-kissed emulsion are stunning! Where did you take them?

Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun experimenting with these film rolls. I shot the Sun-kissed in Caparica, near Lisbon, during a cozy evening BBQ on the beach with friends. The LomoChrome Color '92 was all shot in the east of Ibiza just before sun down.

How did you find the experience of shooting with the Sprocket Rocket? Did it influence your creative process or the way you framed your shots?

I really enjoyed it! It was a lot more simple than what I’ve been shooting lately and I very much enjoyed going back to basics and looking through the viewfinder with the panoramic view. It definitely influenced the creative process as I tried to make sure the shots were always interesting enough to span across panorama by positioning myself accordingly in the little bays I shot in.

Among the many Lomography cameras you've accumulated and experimented with over the years, do you have an absolute favorite?

One that stands out is the Spinner 360°. I’ve had it for over 10 years and it’s just one of the funniest, silliest cameras that grabs everybody’s attention when I take it out. It’s so simple in how it works yet so unique and effective, I truly love it.

What are your thoughts and hopes for the future of analogue photography?

I feel like analogue has been having a strong come back the last few years, which I’ve been very happy about. My hopes are that more brands start seeing the beauty and charm of film photography and that it will be requested more. I’d love to see more experimental film options but I also very much hope that the prices of film will start stabilizing more soon and make it more affordable for photographers who shoot solely on film!

Do you have any upcoming projects you would like to share with our community?

In the past two months I traveled to the Azores, through Brazil and to Los Angeles, and I’ll be sharing lots of that work in the next few weeks. I’ll also be expanding to more wedding photography next year which I’m really looking forward to!
